Local Teams
The Birchwood Women’s Team – aka the Birchwood Betties – share a
passion for cycling and good real food.  What sets our racing team
apart is our attitude of inclusiveness and “camaraderie over
hierarchy.”  Our weekly Tuesday night ride offers new riders the
perfect opportunity to find other fun, fit, and friendly women who love
cycling and introducing women to the sport.  This regular ride departs
from the Birchwood Café, 3311 E. 25th St Minneapolis, every Tuesday
night from April through Sept.  While new riders are welcome to join the
ride any given Tuesday, we especially encourage non-members to join
us on the 1st Tuesday of every month to make sure we have adequate
support.

Birchwood’s road racing roster includes a number of Category 1/2/3
racers, experienced Category 4 racers, and high potential new racers.
Our membership also includes prominent track racers and potential
mountain bikers.  All abilities are welcome.

Besides riding bikes, the women enjoy various activities such as
running, triathlons, skiing, and hockey.  During the riding season and
the off-season, Birchwood puts on several clinics that are held for
members.  Examples of past clinics include cornering, bike
maintenance, flat fixing, an introduction to cyclocross, and winter
training.

Both rides leave from the Birchwood Cafe
1st Tuesday of the Month-Open Women's Ride

Designed to create a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere for women
of all abilities, the Birchwood Women's Team welcomes new riders to
join the ride on the first Tuesday of the month. The ride will introduce
new riders to group riding as well as other women interested in the
sport and recreation. The rides go at a 15- to 18-mph pace with no
single person left behind.
All other (non- 1st of the Month) Tuesdays - Women's Ride
6 p.m. departure. This ride is intended for women only
Any Tuesday which is not the first of the month is generally designated
for Birchwood Women's Team members. Non-members who are
comfortable riding in groups are always welcome, but note that this
ride does not have a no-drop policy (e.g. you should be comfortable
riding and average of 15-18mph.)

Some Local Teams and Their Descriptions for 2007:
Saint Paul Bicycle Racing Team is dedicated to engaging in and promoting
performance bicycling, bicycle racing and related activities. We are one of the only
local teams currently offering an organized Beginners Riders Program. We are
dedicated to making bicycle riders who join our team safer bicycle riders, and to
offer mentorship to riders that are interested in racing. We do not have a specific
women’s only team. SPBRC is a bicycle race team regardless of gender.
However, our Cat 4 Women riders are a solid group. They ride and train together
weekly in preparation for race season. All of our team sponsored rides leave from
our main shop sponsor, Grand Performance. Thursday Night Rides are normally
designated a Beginners Ride. We make a commitment to have coaches available
every ride to help navigate new riders and to work on newly learned skills.
We are a fun, supportive women's bike team. This grassroots,
nationwide team is committed to
encouraging women cyclists - including everything from helping women
doing their first group ride to supporting a competitive NRC racing
team. Other opportunities that we work on throughout the year are
clinics, indoor winter training, and the annual Women's Track Night at
the Velodrome in Blaine. We are involved in encouraging people new
to the sport of cycling. In addition, we are supporting the Minnesota
Women's Cycling Made Real efforts.

We have a wide variety of people on our team—from elite level racers
to beginner racers to recreational/social riders--everyone's welcome!
We are known for our fabulous kits (cycling gear), flair at races, and
ability to have fun.

We do both training rides and fun/social rides—harder rides for those
who are training for the big races, and easier "no-drop" (no one gets
left behind) rides for recreational riders. Ride lengths and speed vary.
Riders have met in Minneapolis, St Louis Park, Bloomington, and
Roseville. Women interested in joining can sign up on the message
board and ride with us.

The Gopher Wheelmen, (GW) is the oldest cycling club in this part of the country.
GW was founded in 1934 when bicycle racing included the six-day racing scene.

The legendary GW training rides meet every Tuesday and Thursday at County
Cycles (CC). 2700 Lexington Ave. N.  Roseville, MN  55113.  651-482-9609.  Rides
depart promptly at 6:00 PM. We ride the same darn route each year. It is mostly
flat, has some designated sprint points, and an intense hill interval.  Please refer
to our web site at www.gopherwheelmen.org for further information about the ride
and for a map of the route.

New this year is a training ride for women the 2nd Thursday of each month. The
ride will depart CC at 6:05 PM.

GW takes pride in our contribution and volunteerism to the sport. Our membership
is currently at 80. We have a strong representation of master’s racers (men and
women- 35 plus). We have a developed women’s team (all ages).  What makes
GW different from most clubs is that All GW members are treated equally without
regard to racing category.  Everyone gets the same “benefits” for racing which
includes reimbursement for entry fees (50 percent reimbursed in store product)
and a discount at County Cycles, our sponsor:  www.countycycles.com

Our Women’s Team:
GW women like to have fun! Our team has a lot of interesting personalities and we
operate like a diverse, yet close family.  Most importantly we don’t take each other
too seriously or the sport of bike racing, although we are competitive, supportive of
each other and women’s racing and totally kick ass (we like to think so, anyway).
We are primarily professionals/ weekend warriors who just happen to really love
racing our bikes.  In summary: we have fun, kick ass, then have some more fun.

For the most part, we’ve been doing this a long time and are very welcoming to old
and new women racers who can roll with the whole grass roots, equality concept.
Many of us have been racing for the last 5-10 years, and some of us are new to
the sport.

Athletes Under Construction is dedicated to developing riders of all ages and
ability levels, with an emphasis on beginners. We're a group of Twin Cities
cyclists who wanted to belong to a small club that was focused on racing and
skills development. Club members are very supportive of each other at races and
in training.  While the club doesn't have a separate program for women, there are
a number of accomplished women riders among the members.  AUC has women
actively racing in road, track, and cyclocross events.  Women who have children or
grandchildren who race will find this club a good fit, since the club is
intergenerational and supportive of racing families.  Coach Larry Martin, as well as
the entire staff of the sponsoring shop, The Bicycle Chain, go out of their way to
remove the intimidation factor for women who are just getting into bicycle racing,
and offer first class products and services. AUC sponsors at least one race
annually where the proceeds are donated to charity.

AUC has a 50/50 mix of male and female members and is predominately new
riders.

Grumpy's/Little Guy Racing (LGR) is a group of dedicated, easygoing male and
female cyclists who have found each other through the sport of competitive
cycling. We seek for our team to be a strong and supportive place for women
cyclists. It is important for women to have an important role in competitive cycling,
and having a comfortable team atmosphere is key to this. By providing a new and
supportive team of women cyclists, we will help bring even more growth, diversity,
and excitement to Minnesota's cycling community!  As a team, we believe a victory
for one is a victory for all. We take as much pride in our own personal
achievements as we do in working for a teammate's success.  We are an active
racing team, and we are dedicated to identifying one another's goals and helping
our teammates to achieve them. Our upper category riders are happy to discuss
training, tactics, gear, or anything else with newer riders.  Our members are
involved in various cycling disciplines, including road, time trial, track, cyclocross,
mountain, and BMX. We encourage you to try new types of riding; you may be
surprised at how much fun you could be having!

Grumpy's LGR is sponsored by Behind Bars bike shop, Grumpy's Bar, Masi
Bicycles, Time pedal/shoe systems, Moose & Sadie's Coffee House, Body of
Knowledge Massage, and America's TPA.

Weekend group rides leave from Moose & Sadie's Coffee Shop, 212 3rd Ave N, in
the Warehouse District of Minneapolis.  Weekday rides are coordinated through
the team message board.  Please contact Gwen Steel if you're interested in
joining LGR for a group ride.

The worker owned and managed Hub Bike Co-op sponsors our own

at
building riding skills and cycling confidence. These rides will be led
by an experienced woman cyclist, and a no-drop
policy will be followed
(no one gets left behind). Rides will begin Monday, April 9 at 6:00 pm.
Rides will run every Monday at 6:00 pm, April until August.  All rides
will
begin and end at The Hub's 3020 Minnehaha Avenue South location

Minnesota! Riders will be welcome to join The Hub women’s racing
